This is a fraud known as Phishing. To those who don’t know what this means, it is in simple terms a way to obtain personal information about you, your bank details so that they can pretend to be you and steal your money.
There are a number of things that you should or shouldn’t do if you receive by email anything threatening you or asking for money.
- Ask yourself, did I speed in Lancashire in the last 6 months? No, I haven’t been to Lancashire for the last 10 years J So it cant be for me.
- Do I expect money from HMRC? Maybe, but they would know my bank details because they know everything about me these days when Big Brother is watching over us
- Does the email address at the top look right? Yes it does, lovely logos etc. So double click on the senders email address or click reply to and you may see something like hmrc@hotmail.com or fines.bedrockpolice@gmail.com now neither of these could even remotely be legit. Some more professional crooks will have better emails but they wont have anything like name@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk or name@met.pnn.police.uk
If still unsure, call HMRC or Police or any other authority, bank etc on a number that YOU have and NOT one on the email/letter that has troubled you in the first place.
KEEP YOUR WITS ABOUT YOU, DON’T LET THESE CROOKS GET YOU.
NEVER BE OFF GUARD AND I MEAN NEVER!!
